A UTI Home Treatment That Actually Worked [Pharmacist’s Experience]

As a pharmacist I’m always a little skeptical of some of the home remedies I hear about. But when I have personal experience with one – and I’ve seen it work – I like to pass them along.

As always – it’s your job to talk to your doctor before taking any home remedy or supplement. This article is for information purposes only.

One night my wife told me she was worried she might be getting a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). She had never had one before so I asked her what her symptoms were.

In case you aren’t familiar a UTI will usually show up with any of the following symptoms (which she had a number of):

  • Need to urinate more often
  • You don’t feel like you completely empty your bladder
  • Pain with urination
  • Cloudy, dark and or foul smelling urine
  • Pelvic/groin/lower abdomen/back pain
  • Fatigue/malaise
  • Fever

It was in the evening and she was pretty uncomfortable so I wanted her to be able to at least get some sleep.

I had written an article before about potential home remedies to treat a UTI. But I had never actually had any experience with them. But I do remember seeing positive things about a couple of remedies: cayenne pepper and grapefruit seed extract.

We didn’t have either of those at the house so we made a quick trip to the natural grocery store. You could obviously find cayenne pepper at any regular grocery store but the grapefruit seed extract might be a bit tougher to find.

On a sidenote, when I got to the supplement section one of the workers started helping me find what I was looking for. She was pretty open and -ironically, told me she had gotten a UTI before and swore that Grapefruit Seed Extract Oil got rid of it.

She said other women she knows have had great results with it as well.

She didn’t have any experience cayenne pepper but based off my research we decided to move forward with the following regimen:

UTI Remedy Grapefruit Seed Extract and Cayenne Pepper
Grapefruit seed extract and cayenne pepper. This is a cheap combination and eliminated the UTI.
  1. Cayenne Pepper Powder. This is the same powder you’d buy to cook with. 1/4 teaspoonful every four hours while awake and also dose if you get up to go to the bathroom at night.
  2. My wife tried a number of different ways to take it but found the easiest was to just tilt her head back, dump the 1/4 teaspoonful in her mouth and then wash it down with a glass of water mixed with the GSE.
  3. Grapefruit Seed Extract Oil. That it is the exact brand we used. It’s easier and more convenient to dose. She used 10 drops in about 6 ounces of water. Once she dumped the cayenne pepper in her mouth she drank this to wash it down.

WARNING: grapefruit and GSE can interact with a LOT of medications. Do NOT take GSE if you are taking other medications without talking to your doctor first.

Quick Note About GSE Oil: you’ll notice that there are a LOT of positive reviews about that particular product. However, if you keep reading users are also concerned that the company may have changed their formulation a bit. Some stating that it’s not as effective as it used to be.

Like I said, that brand worked great for my wife but don’t be afraid to shop around. If you find or know of a better product please let me know.

Continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day to continually flush your kidneys which will help move the infection out.

The Next Morning

I was already up. My wife walked into my office and I asked her how she felt.

She said in a surprised voice, “I think it’s gone.”

She did go to the bathroom shortly after that and said that there was still some tingling. So it wasn’t completely gone – but it was definitely less intense than the night before.

UTI’s are notorious for coming back so I told her to continue dosing no matter how she felt. She continued to dose throughout the day.

That evening she confirmed she had no more symptoms and felt fine.

Update: I had told my wife to continue dosing four times daily for at least 3 days past when the symptoms disappeared. She didn’t. The symptoms came back (but very mild).

She immediately started the regimen back up and the symptoms disappeared.

It’s a common mistake to quit any anti-infective therapy too soon but that’s usually when the infection comes back. So make sure to continue three to four days past your symptoms disappearing just to make sure.

Here’s a link to the exact brands we used. It’s definitely easier to buy them now (they’re cheap) and have them in your house before something happens:

  1. Simply Organic Cayenne Pepper Powder
  2. Nutribiotic Grapefruit Seed Extract Concentrate
